Arithmetic Syllabus for JNVST: The Topics That Appear Most Often

The Arithmetic section of JNVST draws directly from the primary-school mathematics curriculum, but not every topic shows up with equal frequency. Knowing where to concentrate effort makes preparation far less overwhelming.
The recurring topic areas
Across past patterns, a few areas consistently anchor the section:
- Number sense and operations — place value, the four basic operations, and fast mental calculation
- Fractions and decimals — comparing, converting, and operating on them
- LCM, HCF, and simple factors — often disguised inside word problems rather than asked directly
- Percentages and simple ratios — everyday-context problems (sharing, comparing quantities)
- Time, distance, and measurement — basic unit conversions and simple speed/time problems
- Word problems — the format that ties several of the above together and often tests reading comprehension as much as calculation
Why speed matters as much as method
Arithmetic questions on entrance exams are rarely conceptually advanced — a Class 5 or 6 student has usually learned the underlying method in school. What separates a strong scorer is calculation speed: doing the arithmetic in their head or with minimal working, rather than working it out longhand every time.
This is worth practicing deliberately:
- Build fluency with tables, quick multiplication, and mental addition/subtraction before tackling word problems
- Practice recognizing when a shortcut applies (for example, rounding, or spotting a common factor) instead of always computing directly
- Time short sets of calculation-only questions separately from full mock sections, so speed becomes automatic rather than effortful
Turning word problems into arithmetic
Many students who can calculate correctly still lose marks on word problems because they misread what's being asked. A simple habit helps: before calculating anything, have the child restate the question in their own words and identify exactly what quantity they're solving for.
There's no substitute for repetition here — the topics above repeat often enough that regular, focused practice on each one, followed by mixed practice sets, builds both accuracy and the calculation speed the exam rewards.
